Dementia is a brain degenerative disease which affects individual’s cognition, emotion, self-care and social function. Behavior and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) would emerge in the course of disease progression. Carers often find it difficult to manage challenging behaviour and most would experience stresses and burden. Demented people can regain self-esteem, dignity and contentment if special dementia care programs are provided and carers can be relieved of their burden when they can acquire specific caring techniques.
We are a pioneer organization to provide dementia care services in Hong Kong and have participated in a pilot project to develop a ‘Dementia Care Unit’ as early as 1999. Based on person-centred principle, we provide individually based, tailor-made training programs, therapeutic groups, activation groups, and environmental adaptation techniques to enhance cognition and manage challenging behaviour. We also conduct staff training workshops for professional and care practitioners regularly to empower their dementia care skills.

Quality dementia care cannot be achieved single-handedly. Our agency adopts a multi-disciplinary approach in dementia care and our professional team which includes occupational therapist, physiotherapist, social worker and nurse conducts regular assessment and case conference on our service recipients. |
|
As prevention is better than cure, early detection and intervention on early stage
of memory loss can also reduce the risk of developing dementia. We provide memory training for people with early memory loss using
"The Memory Treasure Hunt" (details) which is the first comprehensive training kit specially designed for the Chinese-speaking elderly population developed by our agency.
