Memory decline is a normal ageing process, yet it is also an early indication of Mild Cognitive Impairment as well as dementia. Clinical research data reveal that about 8-15% of those diagnosed of MCI would turn into dementia each year, and the prevalence of dementia for those 65 and above is approximately 10%. Since dementia normally brings severe disturbances to sufferers and their family caregivers, early detection and intervention is key to management of the disease. Numerous research studies also confirm that memory can be enhanced through effective training, and Memory Training program has long been used as an effective psycho-social intervention mode for people suffering from early dementia.

The Hong Kong Chinese Women's Club Madam Wong Chan Sook Ying Memorial Care & Attention Home for the Aged has received donation from a commercial enterprise with matching grant from the Social Welfare Department Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged in 2005 to develop a training kit for early memory deficit which is the first of its kind for Chinese older individuals.

After over one year of literature review, data collection and content improvement, the developed kit was trial run and tested before its final confirmation. 25 older persons with early memory loss were given training on 8 sessions and the Research Department of the Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing was responsible for the research study. Results of the study confirmed that while 9 participants in the control group maintained their cognitive functions, 16 participants in the trial group achieved overall improvement in their cognitive abilities, in which their initiation/perseveration and memory abilities had increased 14.5% and 6.9% respectively, and their quality of life score had also increased 14.7%.
